Proposal

The key aerodrome=* should be used to classify aerodromes according to their importance and purpose.

The following categories are proposed:

A national or international airport for passengers or freight. It is suitable for large aircraft and has appropriate facilities.
An smaller aerodrome that offers facilities like terminal building, tower and fuelling. It is used by sports aircraft, passenger aircraft and business aircraft. If a small aerodrome is close to a border and there are also flights across the border, it should still not be used aerodrome=international, it depends more on the maximum take-off weight.
An airfield mainly intended for gliders. Small motorized aircraft can also take off to tow the gliders up into the air.

Rationale

Aerodromes are categorized inconsistently with aerodrome:type=* or aerodrome=*. I propose using only the form aerodrome=*. Sometimes aerodrome:type=* is in the majority, but the form without :type is very common in OSM and should be preferred. Some examples of this are industrial=*, museum=*, memorial=*, information=* and more.
