A surge tank absorbs the excessive water hammer power in a pipeline or flooded tunnel on valve closings or emergency stops.

Depending on the volume of the upstream pipeline such a tanks can be huge shafts like 200 m of depth and 20 m of diameter - often found in the middle of nowhere. A surge tank may also be called surge drum or surge pool.

How to map

As strategic part of a pipeline system, we map them as nodes with pipeline= on the waterway where their function is, like pipeline=valve.
Despite such tanks can be huge shafts or chimneys, pipeline= should be used on a pipeline node located at the tank's connection to the pipeline or flooded tunnel.

If overground buildings exist they may be mapped with building=service.

Also consider drawing an area for the exact footprint of man_made=chimney or man_made=shaft depending on the actual structure of the tank.

At the center of the shaft or chimney, add a node and use :
pipeline=
operator=...
location=outdoor

On the chimney actual footprint, an area:
man_made=chimney

A chimney is installed above the pipeline it is supposed to protect

At the center of the shaft, add a node and use :

operator=...
location=underground

On the shaft actual footprint, an area:
man_made=shaft
barrier=fence

Here is an underground shaft acting as a surge tank for a penstock located 170 metres below. The shaft outlet is about 18 metres wide
