A collective term for the field of developing reporting and analytic systems, often associated with data warehousing.

Business Intelligence (B.I.) is a broad term that covers reporting and analytic systems and the discipline of developing and maintaining them. B.I. can encompass manual processes using desktop tools or integrated server based reporting and analystic systems backed by a data warehouse.

Normally the term is associated with data warehousing but a data warehouse system need not be present in order to implement a business intelligence platform.
