I have noticed that GMSK modulation is often used along with convolutional coding as FEC. More over, I have noticed that often, the output of the convolutional encoder is not directly fed to the GMSK modulator, but first an integration or differentiation is performed on the data bits, and only then the modulation to analog signal is performed. Why is convolutional coding such a good match to GMSK and what is the integration/differentiation for?
