I had a local welder weld a 3/16-inch thick plate to 1.5-inch square bar. All hot rolled mild steel.
I tried to grind off a part of the welded plate using a thin cut off disk. I don’t normally use such thin disks and had a problem where the disc bent underneath the weld, accidentally removing the weld. I meant to grind through the weld, leaving some of the weld in tact, not around it.
It occurred to me that this might have happened partly because the weld was harder than the mild steel. The grinding disk might have followed the path of least resistance.
How much harder are welds compared to mild steel? I’m a novice.
