Derivation for bridge natural frequency estimate in Eurocodes
The Eurocodes gives the following equation for estimating a "simply supported bridge subject to bending only"*:
$$n_0 = \frac{17.75}{\sqrt{\delta_0}}$$
Where
$n_0$ is the natural frequency in hertz
$\delta_0$ is the deflection at mid-span under…

How do you calculate Mcr (critical buckling moment)
When designing a steel beam, the resistance to buckling is related to Mcr; the elastic critical moment for lateral-torsional buckling.
However the Eurocodes give no advice about how to calculate this parameter.
How would you calculate it?

What is the theory behind Eurocode 1 - Part 2: Traffic loads on bridges?
I'm interested in some theory Eurocode 1: Actions on structures - Part 2: Traffic loads on bridges. How were the limits chosen (e.g. maximum deck acceleration = 3.50 m/s2)? Why is the lower limit of $n_0$ governed by dynamic impact criteria and…

What is the effective depth of a beam with two layers of tension reinforcement?
In EC2 for calculating crack width and deflection, does the effective depth d refers to the depth from compression face to centroid of the tension reinforcement or is that calculated to the centroid of outermost tension reinforcement? It seems from…

What do the parameters k1 and k4 adopted in crack control tables in EC2 refer to?
Referring to page 123 of the code in EC2, BS EN 1992-1-1:2004, note 1 above Table 7.3N indicates that maximum bar spacing for crack control is derived based on $k_1$ parameter being 0.8 and $k_4$ parameter being 1.0. According to crack width…

What is the difference between to Eurocode design equations (6.10a and 6.10b)?
In Eurocode, two equations for loads are given for STR limit state:
$$1.15K_{FI}G_{kj,sup}+0.9G_{kj,inf}+1.5K_{FI}Q_{k,1}+1.5K_{FI}\sum_{i>1}\psi_{0,i}Q_{k,i}$$
$$1.35K_{FI}G_{kj,sup}+0.9G_{kj,inf}$$
Designer is required to calculate using both, and…

How to perform SLS check with strut-and-tie method?
I am using strut-and-tie method to design a corbel. I noticed that Eurocode mentions strut-and-tie only in section 6, which is ultimate limit state design. How do I perform serviceability limit state design for the corbel using strut-and-tie method?

Clarification of cover definition in Eqn 7.11 of EC2 for calculating crack width
In EC2 clause 7.3.4(3), cover c is defined as the cover to longitudinal reinforcement. Say for a beam with cnom of 40mm and outer links of 16mm, the cover to longitudinal reinforcement will be 56mm. However, from clause 8.2.2 of PD 6687-2:2008, it…

What is the definition of Ecm in equation 7.10 of EC2?
In the old British standard we use a time dependent modulus of elasticity of concrete to calculate crack width, which is usually about half of the 28-day Ec for long term modulus. In Eurocode EN 1992-1-1:2004, from clause 3.1.3, it seems that Ecm is…

General formula for calculating torsional and warping constants of built-up section
In order to calculate the elastic critical moment of a laced double I-section, I need the torsional and warping constants. Is there a general formula to obtain this? BS 5950 only has formulas for single I-section. I tried Googling but it seems such…

How can the shear capacity of a concrete slab be determined for effective depths under 200mm? [Eurocodes]
All,
I'm designing a minor slab to Eurocode 2. It's purpose is more for show than any real structural purpose however I need to justify it's ability to resist it's own self weight and possibly the accidental loading of a person climbing upon it.
The…

I am completing what should be a relatively quick assessment for the client, but I have started to second guess my self and would like some reassurance.
Essentially the job involves removing a portion of an existing 2.6m x…
