LTE, originally name Long Term Evolution, is a wireless telecommunications standard evolved from the 3GPP family (which includes GSM and UMTS). The official standard called LTE began with Release 8 of the 3GPP specification.

While commonly referred as a 4G technology, 3GPP Releases 8 and 9 do not officially meet the requirements of 4G but the ITU. It is not until 3GPP Release 10 (Commonly known as LTE Advanced, does it meet the officially meet the 4G requirements
