I need to recover a 160 GB VM file from an HP ProLiant DL380 G7. The four 146 GB drives have a RAID5 array with two partitions.

The problem is they have placed the Windows Server VM file and drive bays 2/3 are failing with bay 2 closest to failure and bay 3 is overheating, causing the server to shutdown automatically after 50 minutes of trying to recover the data with external HDD.

As soon as the data transfer to external HDD starts, the system light turns green to red. I checked the BIOS logs, and one of the drives is overheating.

What should I do?

Start by addressing the overheating issues. It could be due to a non-working fan (identify it and replace it with a functioning one, as they are typically standard), vents clogged with dust (use a home or industrial vacuum cleaner), or the need to relocate your entire setup to an air-conditioned area where it’s cooler. It might even be a combination of these factors.

Once you’ve resolved the overheating problem, proceed with your data evacuation. Hint: Don’t delay, as if 2 out of 4 drives in your RAID5 fail, your only recovery option will be an external backup.
