How can a knife cut through butter?
How does anything actually cut anything, since we all know stuff is made up of atoms and molecules, which can't be touched together (It Requires Binding Energy). So how come we see things all around us being cut so easily?

Force required to crop/cut a mild steel bar
I have cropping/cutting wedges with a thickness of 4 mm cutting either side of a round mild steel bar (17.5 mm). Imagine two wedges being driven together with a round mild steel bar in the middle (similar to the design of bolt cutters)
These wedges…

Cutting mechanism for a robot in confined spaces
I'd like to build an exploratory robot that can fit within confined spaces1.
As the robot moves along the inside of a 4" pipe, it's likely to encounter some obstacles that need to be removed. Typically, that will be tree roots up to 1/2" thick. …

What would be a practical way for removing thousands of padlocks from valuable bridge railings?
Inspired by this story about Paris authorities ordering removal of thousands of "love lock" padlocks from bridge railings. This is not a DIY SE question because it's not DIY scale in the first place.
So suppose we have several dozen meters of…

How should I go about adding holes to laser or water jet cut sheet metal?
I’ve been working on an electric Dirtsurfer project that has many parts to be made from folded sheet aluminium.
Obviously the sheet metal needs holes in it for bolts. The sheet aluminium will be either CNC laser cut or CNC water jet cut.
I’ve got…

Laser Cutting backing material instead of grid?
My research group recently purchased a 40W CO2 laser cutter. We work in the biosensing field and some of the materials we wish to cut are very thin nano/micro fibers that will be cut into relatively small pieces.
When cutting the material we hope to…

Difference between continuous wave laser and a pulsed laser
I understand the difference between the two in terms of how they function; one will release all of it's energy in small pulses with the other creates a constant stream of radiation.
My question is for materials processing such as marking or cutting.…

How does water flow in the water jet cutter nozzle?
Here is a schematic cross-section of a water jet cutter nozzle design:
As it is shown, the thin water jet grabs abrasive particles in the mixing chamber and the mix flows through the nozzle.
My question is: what makes the water flow through the…

Why is there no heat-affected zone with water jet cutting?
On Wikipedia it states that the main benefit of a water jet cutter is that there is no heat-affected zone.
I am wondering about the physics behind this. I have found experiments supporting this, but I cannot produce a theoretical argument. Am I…

How to handle reflections when cutting metal with a laser?
I have heard of lasers being used to cut metal, however all laser cutting machines I've found can't cut metal, I'm guessing because it reflects the light?
What is different in the designs of such machines between those that can and can't cut metal?…

Why laser cutting speed suddenly decrease when cutting sheets from 1 to 3mm thickness then stabilize?
Please to understand what I mean, see the picture below :
I don't understand why it is not a linear curve (or almost), because at first sight it should be no ?
If you need 10 sec to cut a length of 1mm thickness, why not 20 sec for a 2mm and 30sec…
